I think all options should be considered as long as the moves don't significantly weaken any area of the team, so in the case of moving Dumoulin, as long as his place is taken properly, then sure, why not, but I don't think another week of MM in the top pair is enough of a sample size.

If no moves are made on defense THIS season, then sure, moving Dumo should be in the conversation come the off-season. If Matheson remains in the top pair for the rest of the year and does it successfully?

MM/Letang
Petts/Marino
Friedman/Ruh

Again, sample sizes matter for a few of these players in this situation, but it could work.

Personally, I think the second MM has one bad game, and he will, Dumo will be right back up there, so I don't expect it to last. Dumo will, and has earned, the benefit of the doubt.

the only defenseman i dont want them to trade is #58. I would be ok if they trade anyone not named Letang as no one can replace those minutes for that $. they need to lose $4-5M on the D anyway. if that is Dumo, Marino, Matheson, etc so be it. Geno needs a winger.

If they could lose a Dman AND manage to trade Kapanen (and his $3.2M), thats a total win. is it possible they can do that and not give up their #1 pick? If not, throw the #1 in there too. Defenseman A plus Kapanen plus #1 for......

I actually agree with this. I dont see a big enough drop off from Dumo to Marino/Pettersson to stick with the older guy.

I just hope they dont give up on Kapanen and use him as a throw-in. Dude has talent... it happens all the time where players struggle for an extended period of time but he will regress back to the mean in due time.

The only real issue IMO is the PK. Pettersson in general doesn't play a lot of special teams and Dumo is a horse on the PK. I like Pettersson, but he's used VERY specifically on this team and he's a bit one-dimensional, so I would be concerned in that aspect, but if Pettersson can slide into that role, then sure.

I didn’t read the blog but I’m assuming Rutherfords now taking Dumo in a trade.

I can't see him getting traded. It makes a ton of sense and I think a few of us have brought this up before, but I doubt they do this. He is a cornerstone piece of this team and those guys don't get traded before a playoff run. Maybe in the offseason.

Letang, Matheson and Friedman should be untouchable. The other 3 are basically all the same player. I would trade Friedman for someone bigger that does the same thing but you would probably up the cap hit in that regard.

My concern here is that I don’t think Matheson’s game is compatible with Letang’s. Matheson’s playing awesome hockey so maybe he’s too good to fail right now but I have my doubts.

The pairing was absolute dogpoop when tried last year but I think Matheson and Marino are a better theoretical fit with each other. Maybe you bump Petterson up to Letang and have him step into the giant and long nilla wafer role that Dumoulin’s been excelling in for the past X amount of years and see if Matheson and Marino can pan out now that Matheson’s been in the system for over a year and seems to get how he’s supposed to play more.

I looked up MM/Marino's pairing stats this year the other day and was surprised how great they were. They've played together more than I thought, almost 100 minutes, so while it's not a huge sample size, it's not a tiny one either.

Regardless, I think Dumo will be right back up with Letang the moment MM has a rough game.

Only thing I dislike about the MM-Letang pairing is that that makes you even more of a one line team given the top pairs regular deployment with Crosby line. Ideally MM is driving the 2nd pairing with Malkin's hopefully improved line. I think they should move whomever produces the biggest return of the Petterson, Dumo and Marino trio. In the end though I'd be surprised if any of them are moved in season. I think it is way more likely that POJ is moved as the D piece in a trade.

They played together earlier this season for two weeks or so and they looked great then. Plus I think using Matheson there for a few weeks to give Dumo's legs a break isn't a bad idea.

I missed pretty much the whole first month or two of the season so not shocked I have no memory of this. Both you and Rino says they were good, so that’s good.

Kapenan sucks. He's a worse version of Phil Kessel.

Stylistically he's more Phil than Galch.

Flies the zone early, on his on-wing, rush opportunities

Usually the first guy in the zone

Problem is he can't do anything when he gets in the zone.

Can't pass like Phil so when he pulls up to wait for help, he can't dish the puck well.
Can't circle the net and make anything happen
Can't shoot like Phil
Can't play the PP
Can't handle the puck when he does pull up, loses it half the time

Even when the trade happened, I didn't understand why they just reacquired a worse version of Phil.

I meant more in terms of how their careers have trended. Shows promise, some stronger offensive seasons, both have/had dynamic skills only to eventually lose it.

Prior to the new year - 8-3 raw goals for, 56% expected goals for, 58.7 scf, 56.5 hdcf

Since then they are at 50% expected, scf and hdcf in the 40s, but have a 5-1 goals for. I think they could be good. The Carolina game crushed their underlying numbers.
